Let me clarify the Ball example.
What I'm saying is that Ball isn't giving his daughter money to
satisfy a claim. The word "claim" doesn't even appear in this
clause. All he's saying is that he's made arrangements for her and
that's all she's going to get--the five shillings is just a token
amount to stick it in his will. She's getting what he promised her.
Hannah's acceptance of this money doesn't create a legal obligation.
There's a big difference between this and saying "twelve pence in full
of all claimes whatsoever." Edward Dale is acknowledging a claim and
the twelve pence is complete payment to satisfy it. There is a legal
obligation here.
Talk to a lawyer--they'll explain it. I've done the best I can do.
