Hi all,
I was looking on Google Books today, and came across a statement in
'The English and the Normans: Ethnic Hostility', by Hugh M. Thomas -
Oxford University Press, 2003, page 129, (limited preview) that Adam
fitz Peter of Birkin, "may have married first a sister of Adam son of
Swain". No reference is given for this statement.
Does anyone here know of any evidence which supports this assertion
that Maud, the first wife of Adam de Birkin was a sister of Adam fitz
Swain?
Maud was the mother of Adam's son Robert, who d.v.p. and possibly of
his daughters, Juliana, a nun at Haverholme in Lincolnshire and the un-
named daughter who married Robert le Vavasour.

John

Hi Merilyn,

Thanks for that. The lady in question, and possibly the sister of Adam
fitz Swein was Adam fitz Peter's first wife, also confusingly called
Matilda or Maud. She died some time before 1175. Around 1175 Adam
married Maud de Cauz, by whom he had four sons. Adam died around the
end of 1184 or early 1185 when Maud married secondly Ralf fitz
Stephen, the king's chamberlin.

Regards,

John

Well, I see I'm going to have to make some changes. I have Matilda de Cauz as the mother of John de Birkin who married Joan l'Enveise, and NN de Birkin who married Robert le Vavasour. If the first Maud/Matilda was the mother of the NN daughter, what about John?
