Dear John
Here are the notes I have for Adam fitz Peter de Birkin, which have him married to Matilda or Maud de Cauz.
........."recovered 24 carucates in Birkin and the soc of Snaith by wager of battle, in or before 1179 [the claim for same theorised by Farrer to be based on the maritagium of his mother][1] at time of 1166 assize, held of Henry de Lacy 1 knight's fee[1] 'ego Adam filius Petri et uxor mea Matilda de Calz', granted a mill at Stainborough to Pontefract: witnessed by brothers Thomas and Roger, and son Robert[Chart. St. John II:423, chart. CCCXIX[4] ] also, a charter for a bovate in 'Little Midgley' and other lands to Pontefract, with concession by his son Robert [Chart. St. John II:426, chart. CCCXXIII[4] ] also, a charter for 5 acres in 'Byrkine' and other lands to Pontefract [Chart. St. John II:424, chart. CCCXX[4] ]
also, a charter for 1/2 bovate in Fairburn to Pontefract [Chart. St. John II:424, chart. CCCXX[4] ]
'Adam filius Petri de Byrkin', made gift by a charter with the concession of his son and heir John [son Robert having previously died] of a buck or doe every year from his park of Birkin to Pontefract: witnesses: "Hiis testibus, Roberto le Vavasur, Thoma filio Petri, Johanne f[ilio] Petri, Petro et Rogero fratribus suis,.." [Chart. St. John II:427, No. CCCXXV[4] ] gave lands of Leeds to his brother Thomas fitz Peter [Kirkby's Inquest, p. 38[5]] first husband of Maud de Cauz[6]"
Best wishes

Hi all,.
I was looking on Google Books today, and came across a statement in
'The English and the Normans: Ethnic Hostility', by Hugh M. Thomas -
Oxford University Press, 2003, page 129, (limited preview) that Adam
fitz Peter of Birkin, "may have married first a sister of Adam son of
Swain". No reference is given for this statement.
Does anyone here know of any evidence which supports this assertion
that Maud, the first wife of Adam de Birkin was a sister of Adam fitz
Swain?
Maud was the mother of Adam's son Robert, who d.v.p. and possibly of
his daughters, Juliana, a nun at Haverholme in Lincolnshire and the un-
named daughter who married Robert le Vavasour.
Regards,
John
