Critic Edmund Wilson and poet Elizabeth Bishop are two literary
figures that have been on my "wish-list" for a well-researched
ancestor table (I knew, or suspected, that both had New England
ancestry). Given the excellent research tools available on the Google
Books search engine, I undertook to work a few of these lines out for
myself.
Any number of Google Books references show Wilson was son of Edmund,
Sr., and Helen Mather (Kimball) Wilson ...

At least part of my interest in Edmund Wilson's ancestry involves the
Kimball family, as I have Kimball lines through both of my maternal
grandparents, quite a number through my grandfather, as the Kimballs
intermarried early on with the Coffins (Kimball, Howland, and
Whitfield are the three families ancestral to both my grandfather and
grandmother).
A quite detailed pedigree chart of Wilson's ancestry is readily
available on WorldConnect:

Among the "prominent" families I note in his ancestry are the Mathers,
Stoughtons, Footes, and Spencers. I see he has a line as well from
Frances (Bray) Crippen, a clue to whose ancestry I recently pointed
out (the will of her sister Rebecca [Bray] Draper mentions her as
being in New England):

Edmund Wilson's ancestors William and Bethia (Faulkner) Bull are
apparently included in _ The History and Genealogy of the William Bull
and Sarah Wells Family_:

This would probably help flesh out that part of his pedigree.

This is enough for a start, I suppose. There may be a line from Mrs.
Jane (Haviland) Torrey, of royal descent.
