Gilbert held 11 hides in Felmersham, Bedfordshire, according to Domesday
Book - of these, he held seven and a half hides as tenant of the king, and
three and a half as tenant of the Countess Judith [VCH Beds iii 59].
Keats-Rohan [DP 213] says only that he was Norman (perhaps just on the basis
of his name) and mentions that he also held land in neighbouring counties,
which I don't have notes of.
Farrer [Honors and Knights Fees ii 380-381] notes that it has been suggested
that the Meppershall family descended from Gilbert [in Beds Hist. Rec. Soc.
v 230] but says there's no evidence of this.
