This is a reminder that the American Jewish Year Books are a tremendous resource
for your genealogical research. For instance, the Year Book for 5664 (August
26, 1903 - August 12, 1904) is found at the following link:
http://www.ajcarchives.org/AJC_DATA/Files/1904_1905_8_YearReview.pdf.
Two of the interesting sections in the book are the "Necrology" and the "A List
of Leading Events in 5664".
The Year Book has death notices or a Necrology of well-known personalities which
are helpful in filling in personal information on them. Some of these are as
follows:
On August 29, 1903, Hirsch, Goitein, rabbi, at Copenhagen, Denmark, aged 40.
On December 3, 1903, Deborah Romm, Hebrew Printer, at Wilno.
On January 29, 1904, Meir Noah Levin, preacher (Maggid), of Wilna, Russia, aged
70.
On March 17, 1904, Leopold See, general of division in the French Army, Paris,
aged 82.
On May 1, 1904, Youssouf Effendi Krieger, member of the Council of Inspection at
the Ministry of Public Instruction, Constantinople, aged 66.
A number of those who passed away can be seen to have died at early ages. There
are also many Americans listed.
The leading events section contains some of the following items:
On October 30, 1903, "Conflict between 500 Jews and the gendarmerie at the Town
Hall at Warsaw, on the occasion of the selection of recruits. Forty persons
wounded, several mortally."
On January 18, 1904, "there were Anti-Semetic riots at Limerick, Ireland, in
consequence of an address delivered by Father Creagh in a Catholic church." In
addition, "there were renewed disturbances against the Jewish employees at the
Dowlais (Wales) Steel Works."
On May 25, 1904, "The Jewish quarter of Chotin, Bessarabia, attacked by a mob of
three thousand. Synagogues demolished and looted. One hundred Jews injured."
On June 16, 1904, "Fire at Wilkomir, Government of Kowno, Russia, a Jewish
town. Twenty-five hundred houses destroyed, and 10,000 left without shelter."
In addition to the events overseas, there are a number of events which take
place in America, amongst them many fires at synagogues.
Hope this is of interest.
