Dear Cousins,

I second all Carol Rombro Rider's suggestions, and make a few others.

Always assume that an expert in a certain area who who might know the
answer to your question or is able to make your connection has taken up
genealogy later than you, maybe even only a few weeks ago. Using
genealogy jargon instead of plain English, or saying 'the 1900 census'
when you mean the 1900 U.S. federal census, makes it less likely you'll
get an accurate answer to a question from somebody an ocean away, or to
be led in the right direction. Add a language barrier, and this problem
becomes even more acute.

Formulate questions succinctly, without telling your whole family story,
but include the facts needed to narrow the answer and what research you've
already done, so you don't get told what you already know. This is an art,
and an extremely important skill.

If you are answering a question, re-state it in one or two sentences,
or in your answer, to remind everybody. This is especially useful if your
answer is two or three days after the question was asked. And general
principles or specific instructions can be just as important as providing
an answer.

And finally, everybody, including long-time contributers, should
re-read the rules for the Discussion Group once a year - as reminders of
what to do (and not). They're at http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/rules.htm

Regards,

Ira
