Re: Looking for information/connections regarding name Arbeit

X-No-archive: yes
Beila/Bella/Becky (born around 1863) and her brother Lewis/Leib (born around 1869)
followed her son to the UK in the early 1900s, and on a census return Lewis'
surname is written as Arbeit - (this was written by the head of the household so
assume it is correct). Therefore Beila's maiden name presumably must have been this
also.Through a viewmate translation of Beila's tombstone it seems her fathers name
was Yeshaya (Isaiah) Meir/Meyer.

Do I understand you to say that the name Arbeit *only* occurs on one census form?
If so, maybe there was confusion and the responder thought he was asked re employment! Without thinking, he answered in Yiddish "arbeit(er)/arbit(er), e.g., "work(er)". Such general terms were common. On my gf's census listing from 1900,
every Jew on the block was a "tailer", although in fact my gf became a hod carrier
in Chicago (more money than tailering).
