Isaac Phillips was one of the sons of Moses Phillips. According to a
1994 story in the New York Times, the family came from Suwalki in
Poland when Isaac was 18 years old. While I don't know what the
family's name was before it was Phillips, I suggest that if you are
interested in learning about the Phillips family, you should read
"1185 Park Avenue: A Memoir" by Anne Roiphe. The author, a well-known
American novelist, is the granddaughter of Isaac Phillips and the
great-granddaughter of Moses.

Do any of you know the original surname of Isaac/Moses (I have seen both
first names listed) PHILLIPS, one of the founders of the Van Heusen
Shirt Co.? He is supposed to have come from Poland. I found his date
of entry listed as 1881 on the 1910 federal census for New York.
