There are a number of sources which may prove useful.
It is extremely unlikely that the Montreal Star or Gazette would have an obituary for a 1925 death. If you wish to check, I can recommend a local researcher who can
do the work for a modest fee. Although the law required all burials to be recorded
along with births and marriages, for reasons lost to history, most were not recorded in the Jewish records. There are other records available (often with little information), but they only start in 1926.
In addition to the religious marriage records, there are health department records starting in 1926. They would list Max's residence at the time of his 1933 marriage.
For details, see the new guide to Quebec Marriage records on the http://jgs-montreal.org web site. Annual Montreal City directories (Lovell's) are
also available for 1842-1999. There is a pointer to them on our web site (see the
How-To Research Guides section).
Since the 1909 marriage to Annie lists Max as a "cattle dealer", it is possible that he was already living outside of Montreal at the time. I could not readily locate the couple in the 1911 census.
A great resource for the period from 1921 to 1966 is a weekly English-language Jewish newspaper covering news and many social events in Montreal, Toronto and nearby areas - The Canadian Jewish Review. See the article on page 5 of the Summer
2009 edition of the Montreal Forum (also on our web site). There are many references to Smolkin, including a Max Smolkin from Almonte and Arnprior Ontario (both west of Ottawa and NW of Cornwall. References to Max or Annie and Max's children may include clues to their aunts, uncles or cousins. There are also many references to other Smolkins from Ontario.
