I have organized the papers of this society as a landsmanshaft but this is only
to place it in our files. I must assume from the title that it was organized for
a limited purpose; to provide emergency relief. However to undertake this role
which was to provide food and clothing for the population of Jubarkas and
vicinity,[75 km WNW of Kaunas], it became an international organization from Los
Angeles to major American cities, its hub New York City, to Lithuania, Russia,
Germany, France, DP camps and Israel.
Pauline Jaffe, the President, became the dynamic center of an extemely
complicated operation; as the center and clearing house of requeswts from
an international community.From the United States came letters and
contributions with requests for the location of lost relatives. From Europe
and Israel came pleas for help and for location of relatives in the United
States. The principal language of letters was Yiddish in addition to letters
in English, Russian, German and Hebrew.
Postal card receipts/thank yous were written in Russian while letters in
envelopes were written in Yiddish.
Name Lists of people [some with addresses] were maintained and used to facilitate
the requests of donors and recipients.
