Re: Chicago neighborhood 1944 North Lawndale Ave

My great-grandfather Benjamin MELNICK died in 1944, in Chicago. His
address was given as 4800 N Lawndale Ave. Can anyone tell me what this
neighborhood was like at that time. I was told that Benjamin and Mollie
lived in the projects, but I don't know what that meant in 1944 or whether
this address was actually in a housing project.

My grandparents lived a couple of blocks away, at 5033 N Ridgeway, during
the same time period. It is comprised mostly of 2-story brownstones. If
you go to http://maps.google.com/ and put in the address, you can use Google
Street View (Adobe Flash required) to view photos of the neighborhood -- I
believe that the houses looked pretty much the same back then as they do
today.
