I recently visited very old cemeteries in Vienna, Kittsee, Hollabrunn,
Austria; Nikolsburg-Mikulov, Czech Republic; and Berlin, Germany.
Foolishly, I did not go prepared with any tools of the grave hunting trade
even though I own and have read "A Field Guide to Visiting a Jewish
Cemetery" by Rabbi Joshua L. Segal (published by Avotaynu) and Sharon
Debartolo's book "Your Guide to Cemetery Research" and I should have known
better.
Fortunately, in Austria, my wonderful friend and Genner, Traude TRIEBEL,
came with shears, chalk and other tools. My great grandmother's grave had
not been documented so I had no idea in which of the Vienna cemeteries she
was buried. Quite by accident I found her tombstone, which was almost
totally unreadable, in Hollabrunn. Traude rubbed it with the side of white
chalk. Voila! All the information was clear as crystal.
In the old Nikolsburg cemetery (now) Mikulov, my wonderful guide picked up
fallen green leaves to rub the tombstones. That worked, too, although not
quite as good as the chalk.
