BLOOM/BLUM family of Wyszkw, Poland {was "A Daughter's Promise" by Helen Rothstein}

Samuel, who may have been born in London, England in 1870, and who left the UK for
the US in 1886. He married in NY, had a child, but, tragically, lost his family to
illnesses by 1912. In 1921, at the age of 50, he married again, had 2 sons, but
then he died soon after. Since Samuel's father, Joseph, died in 1919, there was a
good chance that Samuel's oldest son might be named Joseph, too."

I was fascinated by Howard's posting. I also discovered that one of my four
maternal gtgtgrandfathers had an unknown brother [a bachelor] - they are both
buried in Vienna and although the family is well-known and well-researched, no one
had ever mentioned him. re: Howard's comment "may have been born in London" - there
is a Samuel BLOOM born in Middlesex in the 1881 census and his father is called
Joseph {a tailor aged 28 from Poland}, his mother is Sophia [aged 26] and all his
other children were apparently also born in London - namely Harris 7, Abraham 5,
Leah 3 and Hyman 1.

However Samuel BLOOM or BLUM cannot be found in the 1870 or 1871 UK births. His
younger brother Harris is listed - April - June 1874 Whitechapel 1c335. Therefore
either the older son, Samuel, was not registered as BLOOM or BLUM ie the family
arrived with a different name which was changed shortly after arrival [unlikely,
as Howard mentions BLUM records from Poland] or alternatively, the census form was
incorrectly filled in.

I prefer the latter explanation - ie the family arrived in the UK with baby Samuel
- probably in 1872-1873. If the name was indeed different, we have a further
problem. I have not followed the parents or the other children to the USA - I
presume I have the right BLOOM family and that they all followed Samuel to the USA,
as they are no longer listed on the 1891 census.
