An article in Sunday's (Aug. 3, 2008) New York Times
"If You Run a Red Light, Will Everyone Know?"
http://tinyurl.com/pfcrim
describes a new web site that offers "free criminal searches."
CriminalSearches. com allows searches through records of all 50 U.S.
states. The basic search is by first and last name and state; the
advanced search includes additional fields (middle name, offense type,
address, city, zip, full or partial date of birth, age range).
Most people I found had committed minor traffic offenses; some of
these charges were years old and/or dismissed. (A disclaimer on the
site acknowledges that "data includes more than criminal records... so
people listed may not be actual criminals. Also, not all criminal
records result in conviction, nor do they all provide dispositions of
guilt or innocence.")
On the other hand, searches for a relative known to have been jailed
and for a high-profile white collar criminal (now released) produced
nothing -- possibly because they served in federal prisons.
