Dear Deborah,
Welcome! The only thing genealogists love more than finding their own family is helping others find theirs - so feel free to ask questions. That's what this list is for.

As Roger said, it's the *people* who may or may not be Jewish. The best thing is to research your great-grandmother's family, and if she was Jewish, eventually you'll probably find a document indicating that fact. Birth, marriage, death, citizenship, immigration, and maybe even old census records may indicate religion long ago.

So start by writing down what you know. Names, birthdates and places, parents and children, marriages, etc. You may think you don't know anything, but write down whatever you do know (approximates are fine at this point).

You'll soon see there are gaps. Maybe you know your great-grandfather's name, but you don't know when they married and where. Maybe you know your great-grandmother immigrated, but you don't know from where. Don't pick a mystery out of the blue - you want to use what you *do* know, to research what you don't know. There are ways to research vital records, immigration, non-American records, citizenship records, and more. The internet, and our group can help you learn how to do that. The JewishGen InfoFiles <http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/> can help you get started.

It can take time, but you can learn so much more about your great-grandparents than just if they were Jewish.

Good luck, and come back with more questions!
