We recently had a questioner who told us the family heard rumours that their
relatives had converted to Islam and confirmation had now appeared in a
document via the ITC, Arolsen which stated *mos.* in the text.

I replied that mos. was the standard abbreviation for mosaisch [in German] ie
Jewish religion; Joe Hirshfield sent in a similar reply; this was questioned by
a number of people who had never heard the term, but then confirmed it for
themselves by looking up a German dictionary. Now here is a perfect example to
study, as extra confirmation, in a current Viewmate. The word *mosaisch*
appears twice in Kurrentschrift on this birth certificate before the word
*religion*: http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=11950

The moral is "do not confuse the abbreviation *mos.* on German-language
genealogical documents of this era with moslem."
