Using the online Illinois Statewide Death Index Pre-1916, I discovered that a
three-year-old child named Abe NASATER died in June, 1906. I wondered if I could
find out which of my relatives were the parents of this child. There was more than
one Nasater family (also spelled NASATIR by some of the brothers) living in
Chicago at that time. I paid for a copy of the Death Certificate, only to find out
that the parents' names weren't asked for by the City of Chicago's Department of
Health during that era. [The child died of diphtheria.]
As for finding a birth certificate for Abe Nasater circa 1903, I couldn't locate
one in the Cook County Birth Index 1871-1916, for this was apparently one of the
many home births that was never recorded. There would, in this case, be no reason
for a Delayed Birth Certificate to be have been applied for later.
I did, however, learn the from the Death Certificate the late child's "place of
usual residence": 147 Lytle Street. Before any Chicagoan tells me that there is no
147 Lytle Street, I checked and there was such an address prior to 1909, when the
streets were renumbered. [147 became 1114.]
So, if someone who is currently researching in one of the many Chicago locations
that have the early city directories (Newberry Library, Harold Washington Library
Center, Chicago History Museum, Arlington Heights Public Libary) would be kind
enough to open up the 1906 Chicago City Directory and tell me which NASATER (or
NASATIR) adults were residing at 147 Lytle Street, I would be most grateful. Based
on some deductions, I suspect that the names of Jacob and Fannie Nasater will be
listed at that address, but I could be mistaken.
Oh, and one other thing, I checked the 1900 and 1910 Censuses, and because these
families moved around, they don't answer the question, either.
