missing person in census

Hello,
My father does not show up in the 1920 census. His
parents and sibling do, but without him. They show as
a family in 1910, and in 1930 he shows as head of his
own household. I would expect that if he was at a
boarding school, for example, in 1920, that would show
somewhere. Is this common? Would anyone have any
experience with this?
