Yesterday, I discussed the problem and possible origins of the family name
"JAILER" and dismissed the criminal hypothesis as fanciful because the
prison-related words in England in that era were gaol and gaoler.
I ended with the paragraph: "So now we are on to consonant changes. In 1891
there are YELLER from Russia and Germany and YELLOWITY and YELLOWILOW from
Poland [both mistranscribed] and, believe it or not, the Birmingham father and
son Isaac and Phillip YELLOWITY [looks more like YELLOWITZ] are both *jailors*
[alias tailors}. In 1901, you can find the family as YALLOWITZ. I will not be
able to follow the family name ... till the 1911 census is released in 2011."
In a supreme moment of serendipity, I received the answer from an ex-pat
British genner Naidia Woolf, now in San Francisco and she allows me to quote:
<At last, the voice of reason! As you pointed out, no one had even considered
the origin of the name per se nor that in the UK a prison is a "gaol" (not
jail). BTW, the Phillip YALLOWITZ/YALLOWITZ in the UK Census was my late
brother-in-law's father. By the time I knew the family (in the early 1950s),
it was known by the more "English" surname of Phillips.>
Luckily we did not have to wait another four years to solve this name-change
problem - we have the answer today and you can see the traditional logic, for
this name change immediately. The JAILER/JAILOR/JAILLER families probably chose
a more direct route involving transliteration and probably also abbreviation.
