Dovie,

Have you tried looking for the more normal spelling of your ancestor's surname --
which would be GELERNTER without the "i". (Gelernter is German/Yiddish for
"learned person.") In fact I've *never* seen it spelled with an "i" and believe
this may have originated with a miscopying or a spelling error.

Hello all.

I know some of you have made some suggestions in the past, but I've tried a lot of
them, and unfortunately forgotten a few so I decided to pose the question
again. :)

My GGM, Rachel GELERINTER, from what I'm told by several relatives, some of whom
were apparently close with her, is buried in the NYC area. However, a handful of
searches of the death indices (the most recent one this past week by a generous
Genner) show no record of a DC for her. I have her obits so I know within a day
or two of her death date. (Jan. 24, 1969)

One of them seemed to imply she died in Israel, and it wouldn't make sense that she
would be transferred back to the US *from* Israel, but I recently spoke with a
granddaughter-in-law of hers who says that, without a doubt, she's in the NYC area
- she just can't remember where exactly.

From what I've been told here in the past, you can't get buried in NYC without at
least some kind of burial permit. I've cold-called many cemeteries already to no
avail. Is there an index of these burial permits anywhere to search? Is my only
hope of finding her actually cold-calling every cemetery in the NYC area?

Thanks to all and I apologize for being so repetitive and incessant about my GGM
but she remains a huge family mystery and I really want to find her stone.
