Jonathan Newman wrote: "I have recently discovered that two of my great-great
grandfather?s brothers emigrated from England to the US, some time between 1872
and 1880, and settled in St. Louis, Missouri. The following information on the
two brothers and their families is taken from the 1880 census. Levi NEWMAN b.ca
1830, Prussia (no occupation given) Ann ... b.ca 1832, Prussia, Keeping House;
Lizzie ... b.ca 1858, England, At Home; Julia .... b.ca 1860, England, At
Home; Michael ... b.ca 1862, England, Son, Clerk Clothing Store; Harrie ...
b.ca 1864, England, Son, Clerk Clothing Store"
As I wrote recently, the England and Wales censuses were carried out every ten
years from 1841 onwards so luckily we can just catch this family in the *1861*
census. The names are slightly different but there is another big genealogical
clue which needs calligraphic deciphering. Surprisingly, they are living in
Birmingham where Levi is involved in furniture and comes from Russian-Poland.
Levi NEWMAN 38; Ann 36; Mother Lea 79; Abraham 10; Emanuel 9; Hannah 7;
Elizabeth 5; Julia 2; Mose 7 days - servant; Susannah Reeves 19 and the nephew
who is very difficult to read William ***Telaham*** 18. His family name is
definitely a transcription error. The children Abraham and Emanuel were born in
Russian-Poland - so the family came to England abt 1854 but the nephew's family
was already here ver early as he was *born* in England.
Thus Mose {UK} = Michael {US}; Elizabeth {UK}= Lizzie {US} ..
The undecipherable nephew and the old mother *Leah* are the clues, first to the
immigration of the NEWMAN family from Russian-Poland to Birmingham, UK and
ultimately to Missouri!
Fast forward to the *1871* census where the family still lives in in Birmingham
and mother Leah, at 86, is still alive and tells us that she is from Konin!
Levi NEWMAN 50 {from Russia Poland and Konin - mistranscribed] - a furniture
dealer; Ann 48 from Prussia; A.B 20 [Abraham] - a jeweller born in Dudley;
Annie 17; Elizabeth 15; Julia 13; Michael 10; Harry 7; Leah 86 - Emma COOPER 18
maid
Note Hannah is now Annie - Moses is Michael and Emanuel is missing or has left
home; Leah dies in Birmingham in 1872 aged 90:
Leah NEWMAN born abt 1782 died 1872 Jan-Feb-Mar Birmingham
Once Leah had died, perhaps the family felt they could safely leave for the US?
Was the son Emanuel already there? Yes, there is a lot to be gleaned from this
data. We need to transcribe correctly the nephew's name - help please! This
could be very interesting.
