In the past, I have participated in discussions, both here and on the
Dutch Sig list, of my Dutch-Sephardic family's naming conventions,
which name after living relatives in a rather set way.
All participants, including me, thought this was a Jewish convention,
differing from Ashkenazi naming conventions.
However, going over some old "off-line" Email exchanges about how Dutch
Jewish Surnames might have developed, I came across a message that
included a link to the following URL:
<http://home.earthlink.net/~gverver/dnc.htm>
This very interesting site and page offers a history of surname
adoptions in Holland BY ALL - not just Jews:
Following the surname description, is a section on "Naming
Conventions", which details the tradition of naming the first son after
the father's father, first daughter after mother's mother, etc. Much
to my surprise, it appears that these conventions are Dutch and were
adopted by Dutch Jews.
Since my family was Sephardic, it makes me wonder what the naming
conventions might have been in Spain before the Inquisition!
