Since I've photographed probably well over 40,000 pictures from microfilm
frames for my various census projects, I want to add my two cents to the
discussion. See my previous post at:
http://data.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.dll?jg~jgsys~archview~159858~weintraub+
digital~127;9

My suggestions:
1. At least a 5 megapixel camera
2. Ability to turn off the flash and take pictures with ambient light.
3. Ability to see the image on the camera's LCD(?) screen..... not just an optical viewfinder (to avoid parallax).
4. Plenty of memory .... like 1 GB.
5. An external power supply so you can tap into house current while taking photos.
6. Ability to turn off the sound effects so as to not annoy other people in the library.
7. A fast lens....something like F 1.8. Note that "f" also refers to the opening of a lens (f16, f8, f4.....). Probably not many cameras have that low a specification.
8. I wouldn't worry about digital zoom as you can do that on a computer....but optical zoom is nice...at least 3X9. Does the camera come with the necessary photo software and USB entry cables to bring the pictures into your computer???
10. Can you see the image after you have taken it immediately on the camera to check to see if it works and is in sharp focus. Can you zoom in on that image??
11. Ability to put the camera into Aperture mode...that is, shoot with the lens wide open and let the camera set the shutter speed.
12. Ability to shoot pictures in SHQ or higher for better resolution.
13. Ability to increase the sensitivity of the digitial camera....the old "ASA" sensitivity of film....I suggested that one takes a document with the same font size asyou might see on a microfilm viewer, and go shopping in a good camera store by taking pictures with various cameras of the document in ambient light
.....no flash, same magnification, open lens, document at arm's length, and then see how fast each camera is taking the picture and how sharp the image is on each. Slower then 1/60th of a second and the image may be blurred by hand shake
.....and the camera cannot be hand held for taking pictures from a film reader. In that situation a tripod or clamp might be necessary to cut down on this main problem with sharpness of the photograph. The other possibility is to go to a library that allows film/reader photographing, and find someone who does it, and then find out from them the necessary parameters that a good camera needs to get sharp photos from projected film images.
