Dear Henry,

You have received several interesting replies to your query but the truth is
that you didn't think to ask what was meant by this phrase.

If you have not done any family research up to this point it's time to
start. As first steps, there are two things to do. The first is to go to
the home page of Jewishgen and print out and read the substantial info
included in the FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) This will turn you from
a neophyte into an intermediate researcher. The second thing is to go into
the JGFF and post your surname(s) and communities and personal contact data
there. You can contact anybody listed for your communities and ask what they
know.

If you only wanted an abstract answer to your question, you already have it
from the other posters but if you want to really search for the names of
your ancestors and their way of life and to find out where and how they
lived you will find that it is a fantastic occupation.
