Nathan Sturman tells us that he is searching for US
descendants of the Jewish aviation inventor David
SCHWARTZ, c1850-1897, Austro-Hungarian, originally
from Croatia, Dalmatia according to some accounts,
(his wife was Melanie Schwartz, apparently of Berlin).
I found from a Japanese biography that his daughter
Bela or Bella SCHWARTZ was educated in voice by funds
of Count Zeppelin's and emigrated to New York in the
early 20th century and had a very successful
operatic career. Sound familiar to anybody researching
SCHWARTZ?
Yes Nathan, I have researched David SCHWARZ [nb not
SCHWARTZ] for his octagenerian relative [Karl] who
lives in Israel. I took Karl to see the grave of Vera
SCHWARZ [not Bella], the opera singer at the
crematorium in Vienna last year. Next time we will go
to see the grave of David himself. Karl remembers Vera
being referred to as "Tante Vera" when he was a child
but inspite of the efforts of myself and a genealogist
friend in Vienna we have not yet found out the exact
relations between Karl and David. We suspect that
David, the aviation pioneer, and David, the
gt-grandfather of Karl, were cousins.
We are not aware of any US descendants as Vera did not
marry and was an only child. She did not emigrate to
the USA in the early years of the 20th century but in
1938 and returned to Vienna after the war.
David SCHWARZ was born on 7 Dec. 1850 in Zalaegerszeg/
Keszthely (Hungary); he married Melanie nee KAUFMANN
whose father was a wealthy timber merchant and he died
on 13.01.1897 in Vienna. He was buried on 17.01.1897
in Vienna Zentralfriedhof Gate 1 Group 50 row 5 grave
3. He was designated an engineer at his death.
After his marriage he became an independent timber
merchant and settled in Eszeg/Osiek (Osijek). He moved
to Zagreb in the 1880s and that is where he actively
pursued his aeronautical design work concentrating on
the use of aluminium in construction - he never saw
his work come to fruition because of his early death.
His daughter Vera SCHWARZ was born on 10.07.1888 in
Agram/Zagreb and died on O3.12.1964 in Vienna. She was
cremated on 11.12.1964 in the Feuerhalle, Simmering
Vienna [MH-359]. She was designated an opera singer
and singing teacher on her death certificate.
You can see her picture here:

and listen to her singing with Richard Tauber here:

This is a great living link to her father, David. I
suspect that Bella, who was researched by the Japanese
is the wrong person.
