To answer your question about the origin of the surname, a more
accurate Polish spelling of which is GEDALOWICZ:
The "-wicz" is a common Slavic (in this case, Polish) suffix meaning
"son of". The "Gedal-" represents the Hebrew given name "Gedalia",
which was probably the name of the father of the first member of the
family obligated to adopt a fixed surname at the beginning of the
nineteenth century. As you can see from any telephone directory of any
place where Jews lived, a frequent way of satisfying that obligation
was simply to call the current patronymic a surname, and to freeze it
in time.
