When I find a reference to a certain parish, is this the church or a
political unit as in Louisiana?
In the U.S. churches have a religious name but these references in Ireland seem to be places. Two that I've seen are Newtownstewart and
Knockcroghery. On these references it says Parish/District but I've
seen similar where it just says Parish.
You don't say what sort of record said "Parish/District". Possibly the context would be one which could be served by either unit.
A parish would be the area served by the church.
"District" might have meant the registration district introduced with civil registration.
Alternatively "District" might have meant "District Electoral Division - see http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/help/locationsearch.html
