Was there a migration route from Liverpool to the USA that went via
Montreal (Canada)? According to the US census of 1895, my
gt-gt-grandmother and various members of her family were living in St.
Paul's, Minnesota. However, I have found the family's details on a
ship's log which states they travelled on the SS Parisian, July 1893,
but the ship was headed for Montreal. Does that make sense to
anyone?
If Minnesota was their destination from the outset, then I'd say it made
a
lot of sense.
I know nothing about Irish immigration to the US and my knowledge of US
geography is even a bit on the dodgy side but I do have an interest in
social history and transport.
I took a quick look at an atlas to confirm that Minnesota (and St Pauls)
was
exactly where I thought it was and once I'd confirmed that the location
was
where i thought it was, it made sense to me.
Montreal is a lot closer to St Pauls than any of the US eastern ports.
Your
ancestors would have had in mind how they would get to their destination
once they hit the American continent and if they had Minnesota in mind
as a
destination all along, Montreal makes sense to me.
