Re: Breen - Breene Why was the e added ?

Like Don Moody says,
The records are written by the person who has "heard what they think they heard"
Persons telling the name to the "recorder" were mostly illiterate,
thus the name is more than likely somewhat Phonetic in the spelling.
De Butelle and Bataille being the oldest versions of the lot.
Shown below are the variations for the family name of my grandmothers family back to 1100 era, that I have come across in records.

One family of 8 children have 5 different spelling of surname in the 8 surnames in records.

Bataill, Bataille, Batailles, Batteley, Bateley Battill, Battal, Batyll, Batayle, Bataylle, Batyaille,

Batayles, Battayll, Bataly, Batel, Batell, Battell, Batly, Bately, Battely, Batley, Batlay, Battelle,

Battley, Battil, Batill, Battill, Battulle, Betelee, Battrye Battil, Batal, de Butelle, Battly, (and once) Battle.

Quite a few of the above variations are still in use today all over the world....

My Grandmothers surname was written BATTLEY, in 1600's her ancestors were BATTELY.

So actual spelling means very little.

Some family members in some families may in more modern time chosen to change the spelling

or add hyphenated names for lots of reasons including "snobbery".

for example, one Politician in Australia was known as and written Geoffrey O'Halloran-Giles,

whereas he was technically born and died as registered which was Geoffrey O'Halloran Giles.

The O'Halloran being the surname of his great grandmother, Mary O'Halloran,

and his middle given name, not part of his surname.

Does anybody know why the e was added to the end of some families of
Byrne, to Breen to Breene. There is a family story that I suspect has
some truth to it, but lacks accuracy. Does anybody have a clue? Thank
You, M Breene
