Based on what I see in this group, I'd be tempted to investigate
Master Genealogist - but so many people I know use FTM.
Based on what you've said so far, you're an excellent candidate for
RootsMagic. It will import your old FTM file (not the latest version
tho) directly, extracting out all your photos into a separate file,
and create a new database in RM. RM has excellent source
capabilities, and much better ability to selectively get information
out that does FTM. Probalby not as flexible as TMG (I havent' used TMG
in a few years), but RM is much faster at generating reports, etc than
either FTM or TMG.
And as long as your friends continue to use pre- 2008 versions of FTM,
you'll be able to import their files directly into RM.
