Re: genealogy software - market share

Peter,

I don't know why, but software manufactures of all types, including
genealogy programs, seem very reluctant to ever publicize how many
people use their products.

But my gleanings over the years have led me to my conclusions that the
most purchased programs (along with my sales estimates) are:

1. Family Tree Maker - available on store shelves, and by far number
1, they probably have over 20 million sales to date.

2. Personal Ancestral File - available free from the LDS church. It
is probably used by 5 million people.

3. Brother's Keeper - the top genealogy shareware program of all
time. Maybe 3 million sold.

4. Legacy - has been making great strides in the last few years with
a fairly full featured free version available 2 million.

5. GenoPro. It was free for a long time, and was a program available
at all the popular download sites. The author claimed several years
back he had over 1 million downloads. He's probably at about 1.5
million.

There are over 100 other programs, both downloadable and online, that
probably split another 30 million users.

These are my best guesses. If anyone has seen "official" figures
published or other guesses, I'd love to know about them.

For my up-to-date listing of programs available, see my Genealogy
Software Links page at: http://www.lkessler.com/gplinks.shtml

Are there any reputable statistics on use of the variousgenealogy
applications? I was interested in market share of Legacy, Brother's
Keeper, FTM, Reunion, Gramps, etc.

I'm after statistics here, although objective comparisons would also be
useful.
