I use speech recognition software.

Do you really? How well does it work
and which program do you use?
Dragon. [...]
I've been quite impressed with IBM Viavoice [...]
A cousin has used Dragon for a few years eg for transcribing her
grandfather's letters - she had to teach it some words (eg Cicero),
but says she couldn't manage without it. (He was a 19C Cambridge don,
and wrote frequent long letters to all his children after they left
home, apparently writing 200 words or so every night and posting the
completed letter at the end of the week.)
I've only tried ViaVoice, which I gathered from web reviews was a
little better than Dragon at picking up RSP in the UK. (It was also
available locally in a noticably cheaper version - old stock.) I've
found it really handy for long articles from mid 19C newspapers, and
wills - it doesn't seem to mind silent pauses as I try to decipher the
next word. There is a need for corrections, partly because my
pronunciation is not totally consistent, but I am impressed how
rapidly it learns some of the extra vocabulary needed. When I had a
cold my voice changed so much that it was better to stop for a while
because the program continually modifies its recognition to improve
the match. (I did consider setting up an alternative voice but felt
I couldn't guarantee that my voice would be the same the next time I
had a cold.<grin>).
