I have 146 images in a directory on my HD. Each is in the 7M
to 9M size range. ALL of these images open off the HD nicely
and quickly using the Windows fax viewer thingy. Being
.jpgs they also open nicely with IE, Moz, and FireFox.

I decided to burn a CD to free up the space on my HD.
Testing on another computer before I deleted from the HD, I
discovered that the first 30 images open off the CD, in any
of the apps heretofore mentioned. The other 116 do not. I
went back to the computer on which the CD was created, and
the result was the same: the first 30 opened, the rest
wouldn't.

If I dump the 146 images back onto the HD in another
directory, they open nicely and quickly etc etc.

From the CD, when I open WinEx, the first 30-40 get the
browser logo, the rest never do. The system simply quits
responding, and even ctl-alt-del takes up to 90 sec to respond.

That suggests that maybe I need to split the 146 into
29-image subdirectories? But I thought I'd ask for help

from some of you who do this reoutinely before I threw a

good CD after the bad one.

Thanks!

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl

My husband bought me a USB 200 gig external hard drive for all my
genealogy stuff & for all my photos.
If I had a crash I will not lose any of my valuable stuff.
Not that expensive either. However worth it.

Diane

Thanks, Diane, but I'd really prefer to get these on a CD.
My husband is going to move a copy to the USB HD, but I like
having a CD in my hands, when they work. CDs seem easier to
me for archival use -- after all, you can fish 'em out of
the mud, rinse them off and they're still good. You can't
(thruthfully) say that about a portable HD. Color me
paranoid? (g)

Cheryl

Cheryl, I felt the same as you till my husband explained what it can do.
I too like having my CD's at hand but now only burn one when I need it.
My portable HD is small enough I can take it anywhere & use it on any
computer that has an USB port.

duplicate it and store it off site

It's easy to grab

yes for a burglar too

& store in a safe place
too lateif an emergency should arise.

too late

>> It's great for storage, easy to burn from
& I never have to worry about losing any of my data.

all HD wear out in the end
or the fomat becomes obsolete

I know this doesn't solve your recent problem as to why your Cd's aren't
burning as you'd like but it would solve how much you would want to store
in one place & how accessible it'll be for you when needed.
Good luck

good luck indeed
