Some of the public libraries in the Boston area have subscriptions to
the online services for NEHGS (as well as Ancestry and Heritage). I've
used their online database to access Massachusetts Vital Records from
the Arlington public library several times, and found it invaluable to
track down birth, marriage, and death records for Massachusetts
relatives. Unfortunately, online access to these records is still a
work-in-progress, so you will find gaps in the records for many
towns... especially major cities like Boston. Also, indexing of these
records is a labor-intensive task done by humans trying to deciper
cryptic handwriting from long ago, so just like the census records at
Ancestry, errors in the indexes are not uncommon.
As Bob said, Research level membership is $75, which includes access to
the online databases as well as Heritage Quest and Early American
newspapers. See http://www.newenglandancestors.org/ for more
information. They also have student membership for $35 if you have a
valid student ID. Also, if you have a local library that has other
genealogical databases, like Ancestry.com, it may be worth asking them
to add NEHGS... institutional membership is $150, but doesn't include
Hertitage Quest. Note that NEHGS no longer loans materials by mail, so
if you need access to their original source materials, you'll need to
personally visit the Boston NEHGS library. If you are not a member,
the same libraries that offer online access also offer day passes to
the NEHGS library.
