Re: Sources for linkage

I would source the census event with the relevent info. Sorcing the birth
from the census (and other events) to me just clutters things up. If there
are major discrepancies, I'd note them in the notes. I did add the
discription field to the census event where I note age, occupation, and who
they were living with. If you add what was found and confirmes in the
comments of the source entry you'll have all the information any time you
printed out. Putting it in other locations just adds duplication.

My two cents, Dave

Thanks, Dave. I'm not sure this answers the question, though.

To try another scenario: Suppose I have information on this same family
from both the 1841 census and the 1851 census (England & Wales). I can
cite each source with the relevant PRO reference number, and I can even
reproduce the exact text of the sources. But it seems to me that there
ought to be something built into the fabric of the program that enables
me to say that with the 1851 citation the links between father, mother,
and son are all proved, but with the 1841 citation no links are proved
(because there is no column for Relationship to Head of Household, in
the 1841 census).

I suppose what I'm getting at is that I want a program that can contain
data on John and both his parents, but in reports and trees will only
show his parent(s) if there is a source that proves the link to that
parent.

Sorry if I appear to be making rather heavy weather of this.

You can do what you want in PAF. Individuals and marriages have a global
soursing and each event has their own source capabilities. There can be
multiple sources for each of these. You could add the three sources that
gave you the three baptism entries noting all the particulars.

The global sources are under the Individual or family souce button on
the
edit screens. Event sources are found clicking the 's' at the end of the
event's place field. Cite the first source as it walks you through it.
To
add more there will be a 'new' button on the source screen.

Hope this helps.

I haven't got much experience with the features of current software (I
started with Heritage for the BBC, moved on to Pedigree, and am now
using PAF). Can anyone advise me if there is a good product (preferably
UK-specific) that allows one to be very specific about sources in terms
of the evidence of relationship links they give.

In case my meaning isn't clear, I give the following examples of
possible baptism entries:

a) John baptised, son of William and Anne.

b) John baptised, son of William.

c) John baptised.

I want to be able to cite a source not just for the baptism event, but
in different ways for each type of linkage demonstrated, i.e. that in a)
it gives the link between John and both William & Anne, in b) it only
gives the link to William (so potentially a different mother), and in c)
it gives no linkage information.

Also, is this sort of linkage citation covered by the Gedcom
specification? If not, it would appear a useful thing to include in any
future revision.

Would be glad of people's views.
