I don't know how many people we are talking about, but you might consider a non genealogy program. I live by a little free ware program, Stickies 5.1. It's a little yellow note program that lets you hide a note until a given time. I use it for all sorts of chores that I don't want to forget. It runs in the tray, so when the designated time arrives, the little note pops up. No other program has to be running. The down side is you have to type in Aunt Maude's name and tell the note to sleep until her birthday.

It can be found at http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/. I also notice that he has a program called 'Birthday Reminder'. I expect it to be similar, but I haven't used it.
