Ignoring the possibility of some kind of glorious cockup by the
enumerator,

I came across a similar case a few years ago and have always assumed it was a glorious cockup by the enumerator.

Henry Ashworth, a Stonemason, married Ann Riley in 1832. They were both born in Lancaster and had 4 children who survived infancy: James 1826, Abraham 1828, Henry 1830 and Mary Ann 1832.

I spent ages trying to find them in the 1841 Census, without success, until I found the following in Wellington Street, Accrington:

Henry Birtwistle - aged 40 - born in Lancashire - Stonemason
Ann Birtwistle - aged 40 - born in Lancashire
James Birtwistle - aged 15 - born in Lancashire - Apprentice Stonemason
Henry Birtwistle - aged 11 - born in Lancashire
Ann Birtwistle - aged 9 - born in Lancashire

I haven't yet proved it's the same family, but their address in 1832 was given as "Grange" and nowadays Wellington Street is next to Grange Lane in Accrington and I haven't been able to find a matching Birtwistle family.
