Are there any such records - for 19th an 20th centuries - available on
ancestry (or anywhere free), for Scotland, like the English/Welsh ones? I
had a (fairly quick) poke round ancestry's card index, but all I could
find was parish registers for specific areas, and most of those 1800 or
before. (But then I'm not very experienced at looking at ancestry's card
index.)

Nudists are people who wear one button shirts

FamilysearchIGI have indexed Scottish births and marriages 1855 to 1875 from
the Statutory Registers but apart from that Scotlandspeople is the only
online site for Scottish BMDs from 1855. The registers are accessable in
person in some locations in Scotland but that doesn't help if you live
outside Scotland

Copies of the films are also randomly spread around various LDS family
history centres. Any of 1855-1875, 1881 and 1891 not in local stock
can be ordered for a short-term loan for a few <insert local currency
unit>s.
There are also random images of register pages or individual
registrations attached to records in Ancestry so searching the images
using the registration district name as a "keyword" usually brings up
a few.
