The 88th Foot of 1779-83. This corps was raised under an order dated 19th October 1779, and was numbered as the 88th Foot. It was, disbanded at the peace of 1783.
The 88th Regiment of Foot (The Connaught Rangers) was not raised until 1793
So, if I understand you correctly it would seem (altho' I am NOT a military expert) that there isn't a unit with that name that spans the entire period you mention.
