I've found a Mary A. CARROLL on the 1851 census
(HO 107/1669 f675 p8. Parish St Marys, borough Southampton.)
snip....
Mary A Carroll is age 12 born Dublin, and the next line has
Michael do age 5 born Bristol Som.
.
So do you think they are likely to be related?

The grouping seems to be by surname but is not alphabetical, this
suggests families to me. Starting from the first page the arrangement
seems to be roughly-
1- Staff
2- Old people
3- Single people, some with children
4- Families including any children
5- Children not with parents
6- Widow(er)s with children mixed with single people and some families

It looks a bit like the people have been listed in the sequence in
which they were located in the different sections of the workhouse
rather than the purely alphabetical lists found in some other
workhouses.

There were a lot of Irish coming to England from the mid 1840s
(potato famine) so I expect they are related and Michael was
born over here following their arrival.

Yes that sounds likely.

Trouble is I can't see Michael's birth on FreeBMD.

Best wishes
