To get to the point, can anyone clarify why street names might get changed
and whether in Victorian/Edwardian times there were particular times when
this might occur (ignoring more recent changes of political or celebrity
reasons). And even more to the point, is there a consolidated list of
changes
Little chance of a consolidated list - the decision would rest with each
individual local authority (e.g. the Highways & Lighting committee, or
equivalent).
Sometimes there were changes caused by confusion over mail delivery (e.g. St
Luke's Street South, Barrow in Furness, became St Luke's Avenue in 1913;
having originally been proposed in 1909 as Grantley Avenue). Slater Road
in the same town became the more imposing Park Avenue in 1908, apparently in
response to a request by a local resident. Several Barrow streets with a
'Back' prefix (e.g. Back Greengate Street, Back Hartington Street) acquired
new names in 1929, since the original prefix was apparently considered
undignified. The part of Devonshire Road nearest to the Barrow football
ground was renamed Wilkie Road in 1992, after the manager who had achieved a
rare triumph at Wembley Stadium.
There are numerous examples of terraces or similar being renamed to fit into
a new numbering system for the main street on which they were located (e.g.
Victoria Terrace, Cambridge, now part of Cherryhinton Road).
Some names changed because they had become to embarrassing for local
sensibilities, whilst others in this category have (happily?) survived, e.g.
Backside Lane, Sibford Gower, Oxfordshire
Dick Court, Stonehouse, Lanarkshire
Pratts Bottom, Kent
Sandy Balls, Hampshire
