Hi Melanie,
If your JHD was born before 1 January 1855, it's possible that his birth was
not recorded aywhere. Registration of births, marriages and deaths only
became compulsory in Scotland on 1 Jan 1855.

I would be interested in any comments on the following as I have come
to a halt on this line of the family.
I know my Great Grandfather was John Hartley Douglas born 28 Apr 1879
in Christian St, Harrington Cumberland (Whitehaven 2nd quarter vol 10b
p 613) and his death certs says ?died of injuries from being knocked
down and run over by wagons shunting in yard of the steel works? in
Workington, inquest 19 April 1920, buried in Harrington Rd cemetery
(2nd quarter Cockermouth 10b 764). He is on the census for 1901 age:
22, residence Camlachie, Glasgow Lanarkshire, Scotland with his mother
and siblings; the 1891 census age: 12, residence Barony, Glasgow
Lanarkshire, Scotland with father, mother and syblings and the 1881
census age: 2, residence Harrington, Cumberland, England with his
parents. From this information I have deduced the following about his
father Hugh Douglas;
Birth abt 1853 Scotland
1876 28 Dec Age: 23
Marriage to Mary Ann Hartley
Harrington, Cumberland, England
4qrt Whitehaven vol10
England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1915
marriage cert for Hugh Douglas and Mary Ann Hartley gives his father
as Hugh, a labourer, deceased?, he is given as living in Harrington
and his occupation is engine? keeper; his age is given as full, so he
was born on or before 1855.
1881 England Census Age: 28
Harrington, England, United Kingdom
grocer, place of birth Scotland.
About 1888 moved from Harrington to Glasgow
1891 Age: 38 census
Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Commercial Traveller
gives place of birth as Glasgow, Lanarkshire about 1853. ,
On Scotland's People there is no Hugh Douglas born in 1853. There are
2 with a father called Hugh one 20 may 1855 (illegitimate) and one in
1854. The 1854 Hugh seems to appear on the census records for Barony
in Glasgow in 1881 which implies the other Hugh is more likely. Which
gives mother's name as Jane Mc Farlane born in Campsie Stirlingshire
in 1833, and father Hugh born in North Leith in 1829. Can't find these
births on Scotland's People. apart from the 1881 census conflict the
1854 Hugh seems to fit with my Hugh as he was a Apprentice Engine
Falker on the 1871 census. on the 1881 census he is given as a iron
turner.
Anyone got any useful contributions which will take this further? My
grandmother Flora remembered visiting relatives in Glasgow with her
father before he died, probably in 1918 or 1919. My mother took her
to Glasgow before she died and she identified the buildings where they
lived, in Pollokshaws Rd. Unfortunately my mother made no notes at
the time and now her memory is not what it was! If I could contact
descendants of this family or descendants of my grandma?s brother's
they might be able to help, but so far no luck making contact.
