Re: Look Up Please For Someone who is wasting a subscription !

ITYF it was fairly common for a husband to do a recce of a potential
emigration destination and establish a job and home before the rest of
the family followed. I have found this with a few of my North American
cousins' families and my own great-grandfather did so to Canada but
came back (my grandmother who was a child at the time had told him she
was not going to go anyway).

Charles,

John went to the US, and came home solo, followed by his wofe and daughter. Another son was born in Northumberland, then
they all went back to Cambria County PA. This must have given Joseph, my grandfather a hankering, because he went over
there a couple of years later. My ggm did not join him but remained behind in Tow Law, Durham, which is where my section
of the family now all live around. Interestingly, ggm describes herself as a widow in later censuses (censi?) but this
was not strictly true, as it is believed Joseph changed his name, married again and died much later in the US, of a
fairly wealthy disposition !

Sarah Bell may be worth pursuing, but it is a fair way from Elswick to Hartley Colliery in terms of travel in those days,
though nothing now. Maybe she lodged with a family called Holloway or similar. Although from a birth certificate and
even assuming illiteracy, Bell is a quantum leap from Holloway...
