That was just HMRC, and I knew which forms I needed. As you say the
probate
nonsense takes forever.

If only we could get as far as probate we'd be happy! My dad died in
May 2008 and we are still waiting for Inland Revenue/Tax Office/ or
whatever they call themselves to let us know how much we have to pay
before we can even apply for probate.

The determination can to some extent be a DIY process using forms
which are available by download from :-

Whichever form you use (whether or not the gross estate is expected to
exceed the IHT exemption limit), you should reach a stage where it
tells you roughly how much, if anything, is due for inheritance tax.

Have you (or the representative/executor) sent in the PA1/C1 and
associated forms ? If they haven't gone in then HMRC won't have gone
on to the probate stage IIRC.

Luckily we aren't having to pay
council taxes on the house which has obviously been sitting there since
May.

Liability kicks back in 6 months after probate is granted.

While I was in England visiting in April of this year we did get a
visit from a council body who saw the windows open and came to see if
anyone was living in the house.

Malvary in Ottawa who'd really like her share of the proceeds from the
house.
