The forms which I had when my mother died went off to the DSS
(apparently to stop her pension etc.) and to the council (who
presumably used it to trigger the stopping of her council tax benefit
and re-allocation of the CT liability); I can't remember if HMRC were
told automatically or not.

When my father died I had to do most of that myself.

I suspect they became fed up with little old ladies who didn't do that
themselves and then carried on collecting their husbands' pensions and
benefits.

Had a 6 page form to fill in for HMRC.

<Yorkshire> Only 6 ? You were lucky </Yorkshire>, you get a half-inch
thick envelope nowadays although to some extent it seems a case of
sending out the "most popular" forms which ensures that the required
but varying correct combination of paperwork is received by most
people. For the probate I had a longer interview than the one which I
had to get a passport.

That was just HMRC, and I knew which forms I needed. As you say the probate
nonsense takes forever.

I have to say every government department I had to deal with were very
helpful. The only fly in the ointment was Crapita who deal with civil
service pensions. They were something of a pain, starting with wanting
signed authorisation from my father!
