Re: BMD certificates from GRO v Local Regisatry

Is that their so-called "search fee" - the one they charge
even when you supply the full details including the *local*
reference number? From what I've heard, they add the "search
fee" automatically if they deem the request to be for "family
history purposes" - irrespective of the need to search. I
wonder if it is legal?
It isn't, for a straightforward request - but you need to supply proper
identifying data - like the exact name, year and quarter, which can be
checked from freebmd.
If you just say 'Mary Smith, somewhere between 1851 and 1858, and I
think her father was Edward James but it could have been Edmund
James or maybe James or James William - though he was known later
as George' then, if they would undertake it at all, they would be doing
a major search and could legitimately charge.

It p[ays to do your homework properly and identify the precise year
and quarter before applying for a certificate/ Local registrars do not
use the number reference in the GRO indexes. For some counties,
indexes are available based on the actual local records.
