Transcribed from the 16 June 1846 edition of The Armagh Guardian
newspaper, by permission of The British Library:
A Voracious Eel.--A singular circumstance occurred at
Bridekirk-mill, on Monday week. Mr. Hodgson, of that place, has a brood
of young ducks, which have been reared in the house, and are now about a
month old. These ducklings were let out to have a swim in the Beck, for
the first time, and they had not been long in the water when their owner
heard one of them utter a cry of distress. On going to the beck, Mr.
Hodgson saw one of the tiny ducklings frequently drawn under the water,
and on taking hold of it by the neck in order to rescue it, he found the
little creature held fast by something under the water; he therefore
laid hold of the body of the duck, which he lifted out of the beck, and
to his great surprise he brought out an eel with it, twenty-three inches
in length and three inches in circumference, which had seized one of the
young duck's legs, and voraciously kept hold of its intended prey, until
it was actually drawn out of the water and secured. The leg of the
duckling was broken, and it was otherwise so much injured that it can
hardly recover.--Westmoreland Gazette.
