News extracts: April 4, 1828: Shipwrecks [Waterford, Liverpool, Portpatrick, Kirkcudbright]

Names: Evans, Martin, O'Neil.

Transcribed from the 4 April 1828 edition of The Newry Commercial
Telegraph newspaper, by permission of The British Library:

The Margaretta, Thomas Evans, Captain, with a cargo of 1256 barrels
of Wheat, and 139 cwt. of Flour, which sailed from Waterford to
Liverpool on the 15th inst. was run down off Point Lynas, on the night
of the 18th inst., by a vessel from South America, called the
'Brothers', and totally lost. The crew were saved, and landed from the
'Brothers' in Liverpool on the following day.
During the severe gale of Sunday last, the Arrow of Portpatrick,
O'Neil, Master, sunk off the point of Ord. The crew consisted of three
hands, and when the accident happened--eight o'clock, a.m.--the master's
son was found asleep in a small cabin in the bow of the boat. He was
never seen afterwards, and the probability is, that he passed
unconsciously from time to eternity. The master and his man swam about
as long as they could, and when well nigh exhausted, the boat lightened
as her cargo fell out, so as to enable them to cling to the rigging. In
this situation they were picked up at ten o'clock by the crew of the
Venus, of the same port. The Nelly and Margaret of Harrington, Timothy
Martin, Master, sailed from Kirkcudbright on the afternoon of Wednesday
the 19th ult. and when in the mouth of the river, between St. Mary's
Isle and Torr Point, she struck and grounded on a reef of rock. The
boisterous weather that occurred subsequently, soon rendered her a
complete wreck. The crew escaped, but we regret to add, that the loss of
property will chiefly fall on the master, a very industrious and sober
man.--Dumfries Courier.
