I have the relevant disk, but it seems to have died - all it will tell
me is "The disk in drive D: is not formatted". If anyone knows of a
method which might bring it to life without spending money, I will
give it a try.

Don, it is also possible that your CD/DVD drive is not well, have you tried it in another computer?
